In recent years, the BC government has introduced significant reforms to the laws governing mining in the province. Changes include a new Mines Act, a revised Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines, new requirements for tailings storage facilities, updated water quality guidelines, new Mine Investigation and Audit Units within the Ministry, and a new Major Mines Reclamation Security Policy.
What makes BC’s approach distinct is the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code Review Committee — a permanent body of labour, First Nations, and industry representatives that conducts continuous review of BC’s mining laws to ensure they stay aligned with current best practices. No other jurisdiction has a standing body doing this work.
BC was also the first jurisdiction in North America to create an independent Chief Mines Auditor. In 2021, the auditor’s first review found BC’s tailings storage facility regulations to be among the best in the world.
