Health & Safety
BC’s mining industry operates under some of the most stringent health, safety, and environmental laws in the world. This page breaks down what those regulations are and how they work.
BC is the only jurisdiction in the world where mining health, safety, and environmental laws are under continuous review. That oversight is baked into the system, not bolted on after the fact.
Safety by the Numbers
First in North America
BC created the continent’s first independent Chief Mines Auditor — an office with authority to audit both industry compliance and the government’s own regulatory framework.
The Only Jurisdiction
BC is the only place in the world with a standing committee continuously reviewing its mining health, safety, and environmental laws. The committee includes labour, First Nations, and industry representatives.

World-Ranked
BC’s tailings management laws were independently audited in 2021 and found to be among the best in the world, with a high rate of industry compliance.

More oversight. More accountability. More often.
In recent years, the BC government has introduced significant reforms to the laws governing mining in the province. Changes include a new Mines Act, a revised Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines, new requirements for tailings storage facilities, updated water quality guidelines, new Mine Investigation and Audit Units within the Ministry, and a new Major Mines Reclamation Security Policy.
What makes BC’s approach distinct is the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code Review Committee — a permanent body of labour, First Nations, and industry representatives that conducts continuous review of BC’s mining laws to ensure they stay aligned with current best practices. No other jurisdiction has a standing body doing this work.
BC was also the first jurisdiction in North America to create an independent Chief Mines Auditor. In 2021, the auditor’s first review found BC’s tailings storage facility regulations to be among the best in the world.
MABC supports these reforms. Strong, up-to-date regulation protects workers, communities, and the long-term viability of the industry.
